It's not about the pose

I don't do yoga to become better at it. Sounds like annoying humble brag but hear me out. One can't be bad at yoga, and one can't be good at it. Yoga is not what is seen, it is what happens within. In social media it often gets forgotten. Sure, you can unlock poses you couldn't do before, and I have some poses I hope I will be able to do one day (like pincha), but that's not what brings me to my mat.

I've heard so many people say they don't do yoga because they're not good at it, meaning that they don't feel strong or flexible enough. But yoga is not about flexibility, the handstands or splits. It's not about reaching your toes. It's not about toning your body. And unpopular opinion, but it's not about completing 30 day challenges. We have enough challenges without creating them ourselves.

So if it's none of these things, what else could it be? Yoga is actually about being able to sit still. To be present, to observe. The poses are there to make your stillness easier. To make your breathing easier. To make your concentration easier. And even practising the simplest of poses can do that for you.

It's not about improving, it's about helping. So that your mind doesn't control you and so that the world doesn't feel so overwhelming. So that even when everything around you is in chaos, you can sit still, and not get lost.

It doesn't matter how your yoga poses look or don't look (as long as you're not about to get injured). What matters is that you are taking the time for yourself, to do something you enjoy, to see how it feels to move your body the way you do right at that very moment. So that when it's time to sit still, you can.
